Background Carbonic Anhydrase 14 (CA14) is a single-pass type I membrane protein which belongs to the alpha-carbonic anhydrase family. CA14 catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide reaction of CO2 + H2O = HCO3- + H+, which is fundamental to many processes such as respiration. CA14 is activated by histamine, L-adrenaline, L- and D-histidine, and L- and D-phenylalanine and Inhibited by coumarins, saccharin, sulfonamide derivatives such as acetazolamide (AZA) and Foscarnet. CA14 is highly expressed in all parts of the central nervous system. The active site of most carbonic anhydrases 14 contains a zinc ion, and one of the functions of the CA14 is to interconvert carbon dioxide and bicarbonate to maintain acid-base balance in blood and other tissues, and to help transport carbon dioxide out of tissues.
